2. The data we collect and why

Personal data is information that can identify you. It does not include anonymised data. We may process the following categories:

  • Communication Data — anything you send us, such as emails, messages and web-form submissions. Legal ground: our legitimate interest in responding to and recording our communications with you.
  • Customer Data — data provided when you bid, list, buy or sell, including name, billing address, telephone number, details of the registration bought or sold, and payment information. Legal ground: performance of our contract with you.
  • Identity & Verification Data — information and documents used to confirm your identity and your entitlement to a registration, for example V750/V778 certificates and proof of ID and address. Legal grounds: performance of our contract, and compliance with our legal obligations to prevent fraud and verify ownership.
  • Transaction Data — records of bids, sales, buyer premiums, payouts and DVLA transfers. Legal grounds: performance of our contract and compliance with legal obligations.
  • Technical & Usage Data — how you use our site, including IP address, login data, browser type, pages viewed, visit duration, time zone and country. Legal ground: our legitimate interest in operating, securing and improving our site.
  • Marketing Data — your marketing and communication preferences. Legal grounds: your consent, and our legitimate interest in promoting our services.

We only collect personal data for the purpose it was collected for, or a reasonably compatible purpose. If we need to use it for another purpose we will notify you. We do not make solely automated decisions that produce legal effects about you, and we do not build automated profiles from your personal data.

3. How we collect your data

  • Directly from you — when you register, list or bid, upload documents, contact us, or engage with us on social media.
  • Automatically — through cookies and similar technologies as you use our site. See our Cookie Policy.
  • From third parties — including analytics providers such as Google, our payment processor Stripe, and publicly available sources such as Companies House and the Electoral Register, used to help verify identity and prevent fraud. Some of these providers may be based outside the UK or EU.

4. Marketing communications

We send marketing communications only where you have consented, or where you have bought from or enquired with us and have not opted out, as permitted by the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations. We will always obtain your express consent before sharing your data with any third party for their own marketing. You can opt out at any time using the unsubscribe link in any message, or by emailing info@absolutereg.co.uk. Opt-outs do not apply to service messages relating to your transactions.

5. Disclosures of your data

We may share your data with:

  • Service providers — IT, hosting and system-administration providers who run our platform.
  • Payment provider — Stripe, which processes card payments and the buyer premium. We do not store full card details ourselves.
  • The DVLA — to complete the transfer of a registration following a sale.
  • Professional advisers — legal, accounting, audit and insurance providers.
  • Authorities and regulators — including the Information Commissioner's Office, where required by law.
  • Successors — a buyer or successor if we sell, merge or restructure our business.

All third parties must respect the security of your data and process it only as instructed and in line with the law.

6. Data security

We have security measures in place to prevent accidental loss, unauthorised access, alteration or disclosure of your data. Access is limited to staff and trusted partners with a legitimate need, who are bound to keep it confidential. We have a data-breach procedure and will notify you and the ICO of any breach where legally required.

7. Data retention

We keep your data only as long as necessary for the purpose it was collected and to meet legal obligations. For tax purposes, the law requires us to keep basic customer data (Contact, Identity, Financial and Transaction Data) for six years after you cease to be a customer. We may anonymise data for statistical purposes and retain it indefinitely.

8. Your legal rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, erase, restrict, transfer or object to the processing of your data, and to withdraw consent at any time. To exercise any right, email info@absolutereg.co.uk. We will not charge you, unless your request is unfounded, repetitive or excessive. We may ask you to verify your identity first. We aim to respond within one month.

If you are unhappy with how we handle your data, please contact us first so we can try to resolve it. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at www.ico.org.uk.

9. Third-party links

Our site may contain links to third-party websites and applications. We are not responsible for their privacy practices, and we encourage you to read their privacy policies.
